Today, the number of women actually running their own business is growing every day. So what are the key factors involved if you want to join these other enterprising women? Many of the issues related to starting up businesses are universal, however, there are some things to consider as a potential female business owner.

Becoming your own boss is not a decision you make on a moment's notice. It requires careful consideration. The income is not as stable as that when you're employed, the work is not guaranteed, and depending on the type of work you'll be doing, the undertaking may be quite risky. Here are some things to consider when deciding whether to become your own boss:

.) Working for yourself is as challenging as working for someone else. You have to worry about budgeting, accounting, marketing, public relations, and performing well enough to keep the business running and successful.

.) Women are great organizers— they show imagination and are very practical: all ideal skills for running a business. What particular skills do you have that you can apply in a business environment?

.) Expect to put in long hours. Women who work for themselves generally work longer and harder hours than they did when they were working for someone else. So, if you're working for yourself in order to take a break and expecting some time to relax, girl, you better think twice. The advantage to this however, is that the hours can be done at your own leisure.

.) Women are often naturally outgoing (making them ideal networkers), and are excellent at multi-tasking. Do you have what it takes to make contacts and introductions? If not, do you have a potential business partner who could handle this side of things?

.) Find a good industry. The industry you choose to work in should be one that isn't subject to downsizing. You want to find an industry that’s growing, so you can have an easier time finding work.

.) Women can lack confidence in their own abilities and need plenty of support from a network of their peers especially when starting on new paths. If this applies to you, do you have friends who can lend you support and give you encouragement when needed?

.) Don't choose an industry that already has mega stores. You want to avoid industries that already have stores that the majority of people do business with. The best small businesses are the ones that can specialize in something that you can’t easily find elsewhere.

.) Women are reluctant to ask for financial help when setting up a business and tend to use their own hard earned money instead. Do you feel comfortable asking for a loan? If not, have you thought about how to raise capital?

.) Have some capital. A good plan is to have money to support yourself for at least three months once you start your business. This will help you be a bit more relaxed and less concerned about your personal situation and more concerned about forwarding your business.

.) Women often choose to run businesses that allow them the freedom to spend time with the family too. Is this a consideration for you? Have you planned out exactly how this would work in terms of presenting a professional image and getting work done when needed?

.) Avoid burn out. When you work long hours for yourself, it's easy to get burned out. Take breaks frequently, exercise, and make sure you take a couple days off now and then. It's easy to get so caught up in your business that you forget about keeping yourself healthy mentally and physically.

.) Write a business plan. Talk with your local branch of the Small Business Administration about what kinds of things you should keep in mind when starting your business. You should write a business plan so you know where you're headed, and you can stay more focused on your goals.

This list is to assist you in helping yourself take into account the advantages you have, and the disadvantages you could be up against. Everyone's experiences are different and there are no hard and fast rules, but having prior knowledge of the traps can help you find your way to success.
