There are a lot of programs that are designed to help youths that gave problems and potentially could become juvenile offenders or do harm to themselves and others. These programs include:
Behavior Modification Schools. These schools deal with teenagers that have social and emotional problems that are reflected in their behavior. There are counselors at these schools who are trained with dealing with troubled teens and are well able to help them. At these schools the teenagers still continue on with their regular curriculum, but are also taught how to deal with their problems. Anger management, for example, is one way that teens that are always angry and resort to violence are taught to be able to control their violent tendencies. The counselors are well able to deal with teens that had ADD or ODD and are able to plan programs to help the teens deal with the problems that they have.
Boot Camp Style Schools. These are schools that deal with a military style setting, with uniforms, strict discipline and a rigid structure. At these schools, students continue with their education, but also learn how to deal better with authority figures and become more accepting of authority.
Boarding schools for troubled teens. These incorporate some of the characteristics of behavior modification schools and military style schools in attempting to help the teenager regain his/her control over his/her life. It is often better for troubled teens to be removed from their homes and live in a different setting where they can get a different perspective on their lives and their own problems. Some of these schools deal with specific problems that teens have and specialize in different treatment styles.
Homes for Troubled Teens. Sometimes parents who can no longer deal with the troubled teen relinquish control of the child to the public health system. There are group homes with trained personnel who can deal with the problems and help the teens. Sometimes the teens have to be placed in foster homes, which can improve the situation or make it worse depending on the particular problems.
Rehab programs. If the teen has a drug or alcohol problem, a rehabilitation program might be the answer. These programs help the teen to become drug free through a medical program supervised by medical personnel. They are also counseled about the program and the benefits of being drug free. Teenagers usually do not leave these centers until they are drug free, but many of them do revert back to their old ways once they return to their old neighborhood and their old friends.
Troubled Youth Program. This program is designed for teens that have been expelled from school for causing fights and other disturbances and may be experiencing various legal problems and/or drug and alcohol abuse problems. The intention of this type of program is to help the teen before he/she gets lost in the system and slips through the cracks. The school system only has so many resources to handle troubled teens and the legal system is a little too strict. The teens in this program are those that are just starting to become repeat juvenile offenders and it is hoped that early intervention will steer them on the right path.
Residential treatment homes. These are homes where teens receive help for specific problems such as depression, suicide, and /or substance abuse.
Wilderness Camps. These programs take the teens on camping trips, similar to a vacation. Here they are taught survival skills and receive counseling from the supervisory staff that accompanies them on the trip. They are away from all types of drugs and alcohol in an environment where they learn how to rely on themselves to become self-sufficient. These camps are usually very successful because they help to raise the teen’s self-esteem and self-confidence.
