With terrorist threats and attacks affecting countries all over the world, it is more important than ever that we prepare ourselves for the possibility of a biological or nuclear attack. However far off or unlikely this sort of attack may seem, nobody really knows when or where it may occur, and to wait until it already has occurred before formulating a plan is not really going to benefit you or your family. The time to act is now.
There are a number of way in which you can prepare for these types of attacks in order to minimise on the risks to you and your loved ones.
Biological or Chemical Attack:
In order to be prepared for this type of attack you should:
- Decide which room you will use as a shelter – a room in which outside air can be blocked out to minimise on contamination within your home
- Stock up the room with tinned or packaged food that will no perish as well as bottled water
- Prepare some plastic sheeting that is already cut to size for the windows, doors and vents of the room, and also have some tape at hand to seal up the doors, windows and vents
- Have a battery operated radio available so that you can keep yourself up to date, even if electricity is cut
- Have a first aid kit in your shelter room in case of medical emergency during the time you are in the shelter
- Keep a stock of sanitation supplies as you don’t know how long you might be in the shelter room
- Have blankets and warm clothes available in the shelter in case it gets cold
- If any member of your family takes regular medication, ensure that there is a supply of it in your shelter
- Have a couple of flashlights and batteries put aside
- Use an air purifier and filter in case of any minor leakage of contaminated air (even after sealing the windows, doors etc.)
These are precautions that you can take within the home, but there are also other ways in which you can prepare yourself. These include:
- Familiarising yourself with the warning sound that will be given in your town/city to signify that an attack is taking place
- Check whether there are any public places within your area that are designated shelters in the event of an attack
- For those living in apartment blocks you should speak to the manager about any designated shelter in the building or ask about the most appropriate place within the building to use
- Find out about the evacuation procedures within your town or city
- Make sure that you whole family knows the procedure, both in the event that you have to stay in your shelter and in the event that you have to evacuate. Tim will be of the essence and it is crucial that every member of the family knows what they have to do
- Establish a way that you and your family can quickly contact one another in the event that you are not together when an attack takes place, such as everyone contacting a friend or relations that lives out of the area and therefore will not be affected by the attack.
