With the exception of fire, floods are the most common of natural disasters and can affect destinations all over the globe. Flooding can caused by a number of situations such as violent thunderstorms, heavy or frequent rains, overflow of inland or tidal waters, or thawing of major snowfalls. Floods can cause a great deal of damage and destruction, and tend to develop over the course of several days. The risk of flooding depends upon your location as well as on weather conditions.
The size of a flood will depend upon it cause and the intensity of its cause, such as heavy rains or heavy snowstorms that have started to thaw. It is impossible to predict when flooding will occur – unlike storms they cannot be tracked using any form of device. However, you can track when very heavy rains are expected and this may bring about flooding.
There are some areas that are prone to flooding, and these are known as floodplains. Most of these areas are close to inlands waters, such as rivers and streams, hence the increased likelihood of flooding. The amount of land affected will depend upon the size and intensity of the flood, and many larger floods can and do cause vast amounts of damage. If your area is flooded, don’t try and walk or drive through it as you could end up getting seriously injured by the force of the waters, which could carry your car away and literally knock you off your feet and float you away.
If you live in an area prone to flooding or at risk from flooding (for example, near to a riverbank or lake) then you should ensure that your home is insured against flood damage. Floods can cause an enormous amount of damage to homes and property within the vicinity, and without appropriate insurance you could end up paying a fortune for repairs and replacements. You should also ensure that you are fully prepared for a flood, keeping valuables in a safe place upstairs where they are unlikely to be affected by flood and keeping proof of purchases to help with insurance claims in the event of flood damage.
You also need to wise up in preparation for a flood. Make sure that you are well stocked on non-perishable foods and bottled water. You may not be able to get out for a while during a flood and electricity may be lost, so you need a stock of food that will not spoil. You will need fresh water because flooding can cause contamination of water. Keep a battery-operated radio in the house so that you can keep up to date with important information. And designate an upstairs room as a ‘safe’ room in which you can keep all of these items. The upstairs of your house is unlikely to be affected in the event of a flood, so this will be your safest option.
Floods can be destructive and devastating, and each year many people lose their homes and property due to these forces of nature. However, being prepared and insured can go a long way towards minimising on damage and helping to replace damaged and destroyed items.
