There are certain criteria that you have to meet in order to be able to take the GED test. You must be over the age of 16 and not have completed the regular high school diploma. There are also specific criteria for each province and state regarding your residency status and the length of time it has been since you left school. If you have a high school diploma from an unaccredited high school and the colleges and universities will not accept it, then you are also eligible to write the GED test.

Although you can take courses to help you prepare for the GED online, you cannot take the test online. You have to appear in person at a designated testing site in order to take the tests required for the certificate. The score you need to pass is 410 or more on each of the five tests or a combined average of 450 on all five tests. You also need to score at least 2 on the essay in order to pass.

If you don’t pass the test the first time, you are allowed to try again – up to three times a year and the scores you receive are valid for three years. This means that if you fail one test and pass the others, you don’t have to write all five over again. You just need to write the test you need to get the certificate.
