Mental illnesses are brain conditions, some of which can be cured while others can be just controlled. There are some major differences between the different types of these illnesses as well. There are different types of mental illnesses including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, impulse control and addiction disorders, personality disorders and sexual disorders.

Anxiety is a normal emotion, but when it starts taking your life out of your hands, it may be considered as a mental condition that will result in a mental disorder such as anxiety disorders. Some of these conditions include panic disorders, post-traumatic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias or social anxiety disorder. Mood disorders are those that involve feeling of sadness or extreme happiness. Depression and bipolar disorder are considered in this level.

Eating disorders are those where the patient cannot deal with food and weight properly. Patients eat a lot or don’t eat at all. They believe they are overweight when they are not and vice versa. Anorexia and bulimia are the most common eating disorders. Patients that suffer from impulse control and addictions disorders usually perform acts that can hurt themselves or others. Some of these disorders include kleptomania, pyromania and alcoholism.

Personality disorders can even be dangerous, as some people do not know who they are or what they are doing. Some people cannot get along with other individuals and they stop going out to work or even socializing. Paraphilia is a sexual disorder, which is characterized by weird desires such as having sex with kids or animals. This disorder can have serious consequences as well.

Mental illness can be treated and controlled, but it must be detected on time and the sooner the better to start with the proper treatment. The patient and the family of a patient will need support to go through the illness.
