When someone has been diagnosed with a mental condition, it is very important to treat it correctly and provide the right support. Treating mental illness could be a little complicated and expensive; however the results for the patients are successful and help them to get a better quality of life.
The complicated part about the mental illness comes when the patient or the family cannot accept that there is a mental condition between them or in a family member. After the acceptance problem passes everything starts getting better. However, the family needs to have patience with the patient and try to support them with the right attitude. The patient shouldn’t be treated totally different, but they do need a lot of support to go through the illness. Sometimes even the family needs support to face the situation and go through it together.
There are a lot of treatments, some of which can be just directed pills by a doctor or some others even consist of staying at a hospital or rehabilitation center to recover. People affected by mental illness may receive medical treatment from a psychiatrist or a general practitioner depending on the status of the mental illness. Some treatments include community support, psychological therapy, hospitalization, involuntary treatment and other kind of treatments. Involuntary treatments are used in cases where people who need treatment don’t agree to get it themselves. If the family agrees with this treatment after discussing the benefits for the patient, the psychiatrist will do it.
Years ago, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was used to help the patients and even while it is still used these days it is not very common. This therapy consists of giving a general anesthetic and muscle relaxant to the patient and then passing an electrical current through the brain.
Some mental illnesses can be cured; some others can only be controlled, but the sooner you look for help the better for everyone.
