Paranoid schizophrenia is one of several types of schizophrenia and is the most commonly seen form worldwide. It is one of the most serious and baffling diseases know to medical professionals. The symptoms of this type may occur in episodes, with or without remission, or can be chronic. The first signs of the disease usually occur between the ages 15 and 34. Sometimes it is not easy to diagnose this form of illness as the person may seem very normal.
In this form of the illness the individual often exhibits symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions. These hallucinations after often auditory where the person hears voices in their head that either is threatening to them or commands them to do things. There may also be hallucinations for taste or smell or on rare occasion’s vision.
The person may also have delusions of grandeur in order to protect them from what they think is a possible plot against them.
They often feel that they are being persecuted or plotted against and are suspicious, reserved, and often withdrawn from society. Delusions may be of any kind including control, influence, or passivity.
Some other common symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia include exalted birth, special mission, jealousy, or bodily change. Also associated with this may come anger, anxiety, and possible violence. Disturbance of affect, volition, and catatonic symptoms may also be present.
There is currently no cure for the disease, but it can be controlled with antipsychotic medications or in more serious instances by hospitalization. No treatment is 100% guaranteed to help as every individual is different. One key to treating the disease is catching it early. If found later in life impairment may be more permanent and less treatable. It is also important when diagnosing to exclude some things as epileptic psychosis or drug induced states and delusions also may not hold much weight in certain cultures.
