There are a lot of types of discrimination and one of the most shocking may be sexual harassment. Some people don’t even know that being sexually harassed is illegal and it violates the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Sexual harassment can take place in any of these circumstances including requests of sexual favors, unwelcome sexual advances or any verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature when it affects work performance or creates a hostile or offensive work environment.
Sexual harassment can also refer to being touched inappropriately, making offensive jokes about women or men, displaying sexually offensive pictures, or making sexual requests or suggestions.
There are some important points that must be considered including that the victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man and it doesn’t matter if the victim is the same sex as the harasser – it is still sexual harassment. The harasser can be the victim’s supervisor, employee, co- worker, a teacher, class mate, landlord or a non employee.
Sexual harassment can also take place in schools or even in your home and not just in your work environment. It could affect not just adults but kids as well.
It is hard to speak out about sexual harassment and some people just let it pass, but it could only take one single incident to be considered as sexual harassment. There are a lot of places where you can receive help and orientation about the subject. You must not be afraid of talking about this situation with someone and looking for help.
There are also laws that support you in this matter and the harassers can be made to pay for his or her crime. Nobody should feel forced to take any level of this behavior, and it is important to get help from an institution or a lawyer who can help to deal with the situation and put an end to the harassment.
