There are a lot of types of discrimination and one of them is discrimination based on religion. Even when we should be free to be able to have our own creed and beliefs, there are a lot of problems when people believe they are right and that’s the last word. We should be able to believe in God, Buddha or whatever our culture has taught us without having to face any kind of discrimination.
It is good to know that there are rules and laws in some countries that support us as individuals and support in order to let us to defend our beliefs. We are not supposed to be treated differently from others because of our religion, color, gender, sexual preference or age. That’s why we have human rights and we live in a free country even when there are still some countries that don’t have that freedom yet.
The definition of "religion" is not restricted to the orthodox denominations. Since the provisions under religion include a lack of belief, atheists are also covered. Religious beliefs must be respected as long as they don’t hurt anyone; otherwise it would be against the others individual human rights.
A terrible example of discrimination based on religion has to do with the tragic events of September 11 th, as some people suffered terrible harassment because of their beliefs or origin. Anger at those responsible for events should not be misdirected against innocent individuals because of their religion, ethnicity, or country of origin.
Anyone can face discrimination, it could be a kid or an adult and it could take place in the school, work place, public accommodations or when you rent a house or an apartment. However, you have the right to be treated equally, otherwise you can take legal action against the person who is discriminating against you or your family.
