Vegetarianism has steadily increased in popularity over the years, and people switch to being vegetarian for a number of reasons. For some people, the decision to become vegetarian is simply a matter of principle – they don’t wish to eat the flesh of an animal. Other people decide to go vegetarian for health reasons – meat has been associated with a number of illnesses and can also prove fattening depending on the type of meat that you eat. Others are vegetarian for religious reasons, and some people simply don’t like the taste and texture of meat.
Many people think that vegetarians are those that do not eat meat, but do eat chicken, fish, and dairy products. Whilst some vegetarians do eat dairy products such as cheese, butter, and eggs, many vegetarians would argue that eating chicken and fish is not part of a vegetarian diet. There are also those that do eat chicken and fish, and still class themselves as vegetarians.
Another dietary habit often known as vegetarianism is actually the vegan diet. This is a far stricter version of a vegetarian diet, and vegans do not eat any products that originate from animals, which include eggs and dairy products. Many vegetarians are also very particular about ingredients in food products. For instance, many will always read the ingredients on cakes, sweets, and deserts, to ensure that there is no gelatin, which is a gelling agent made from boiled animal bones.
In the past life could be very difficult for vegetarians when it came to enjoying range of tasty food. Choice was very limited in both restaurants and at the grocery stores, which often meant that vegetarians had to endure boring and sometimes nutritionally imbalanced diets. Going out for dinner could prove something of a nightmare as vegetarians had very little to select from
These days, things are very different for both vegetarians and vegans. It is now possible to enjoy a really varied and interesting diet as a vegetarian, not to mention a healthy and nutritious diet. Many vegetarians also take vitamins to supplement their diets to make up for nutritious vitamins and minerals that may be missing from a vegetarian diet. Supplements may prove particularly useful for vegans, who miss out on the valuable nutrients from dairy products as well as the nutrients found in meat.
With such a wide range of vegetarian dishes and food products to select from, more and more people are choosing to go vegetarian. You can now enjoy eating sausages, bacon, steaks, ham, chicken, turkey, and much, much more – and you won’t have eaten a morsel of meat. The range of vegetarian foods today includes everything from vegetarian fishcakes to vegetarian lamb chops. Food manufacturers use special flavorings and Soya to make a range of tasty ‘meat free’ products to suit every taste.
Going out to eat in restaurants is also far easier these days for vegetarians. Most restaurants – even burger bars that served little more than fat-filled fries for vegetarians in the past – now offer an extensive menu for vegetarians. With bigger restaurants that have table menus, the vegetarian food is usually clearly labeled or in its own section, making it easier for vegetarians to select. And the range of food offered for vegetarians in restaurants these days is extensive, ranging from simple jacket potatoes and pasta to more elaborate dishes.
Most major supermarkets and grocery stores also offer a vast range of vegetarian food products, and once again these are clearly labeled to enable vegetarians and vegans to easily identify that they are no meat products, even though they may look just like meat! The advancements in food technology means that some of the meat free products today offer the same taste and texture as meat, making it easier for those that enjoy their meat but wish to give up for health or other reasons.
