When you are deciding upon where to place your planting beds, you will need to exercise some careful consideration and thought. You need to select locations throughout your garden that will make the most of your plants, and that will really show off the beauty of any flowers that you plant. You will also want to select places where the plants will benefit from both rainfall and sunshine, so don’t go for really shady or sheltered areas.
Once you have decided where you want your plant beds, you need to mark out the proposed bed. There are a number of ways in which you can do this. For a curved or circular plant bed, you can use a hosepipe to mark out the space that you plan to use, a this will be flexible and long enough to mark out a decent space. You can then use spray chalk or spray paint to mark the outside of the hosepipe circle so that you have a definitive space for your planting bed. If you are creating a square planting bed, than sticks and string can be used to mark the space.
Once you have marked the space for your planting beds, you can start to mark the area by cutting through the outline with a spade. You then need to remove the hosepipe or the sticks and string. Your next step will be to remove the grass from the soil, and to do this you need to slide your spade under the grass at a horizontal angle and take off the grass bit by bit until there is nothing left in the marked area but soil. You must then remove the topsoil, placing it somewhere convenient such as on polythene or tarpaulin sheets nearby. Mix in some compost to enrich and fertilize the soil, and turn in well so that it combines properly.
You then need to prepare the rest of the planting bed before replacing the topsoil. To do this, you need to remove any weeds and debris from the patch of land. You should also break up any large chunks of dirt and soil, and remove stones and bricks that may be embedded in the ground. Once you have done this, for through the soil to ensure that it is free of debris, clods and weeds, and then add some compost to the soil and turn it over to ensure an even mix. Once you have done this, you can shovel on the topsoil and then rake it off to a smooth finish.
Once you have completed this, your planting bed should look level, rich and ready to nourish a variety of plants. Remember, you should always think carefully about where you are going to put your plants, as rushing in to it could mean putting in this work for nothing. Taking the time to pick out a space that will keep your plants healthy as well as show them off means that you can take pride in your work and enjoy a long lasting and beautiful garden.
