Established by Robert Redford in 1981, the Sundance Institute is the organization behind the well known Film Festival, which takes place annually in Park City and Salt Lake City in the state of Utah, as well as at Sundance Village. This festival offers support and inspiration for emerging artists and talent as well as for the more experienced talent. Thousands have gleaned support and exposure through this festival, which takes place each January. This film festival became part of the Sundance family in 1985, having run for around six years as the Utah/US Film Festival. However, although the festival ran a national competition and included an eclectic range such as short films, dramas, and documentaries, it was its needs for further financial, administrative, and organizational backing that saw it become part of the Sundance Institute.

Today, the Sundance Film Festival is known around the world, and as well as showcasing and encouraging new American talent also focuses on international talent. The festival was renames the Sundance Film Festival in 1991, and today continues to showcase independent talent and enjoys international recognition as well as huge audiences.

The Sundance Film Festival will be running once again in 2006, and calls for entries to the festival have already been put out.
