The San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is the premiere event for choosing some of the best films of the year. Many of the films presented have an international flavor. For example, the films rated the best at this year’s gay and lesbian film festival in San Francisco included:

• ZERO DEGREES OF SEPARATION – a film about gay couples in Israel and Palestine
• TRANSAMERICA – a slightly off-color comedy

Gay and lesbian film festivals are bringing exceptional films and movies to the silver screen. Because such topics are no longer taboo, anything goes when it comes to a film festival. Big-time distributors are the ones that can make or break a film and when they see something they like at a film festival, the sky is often the limit for those connected with the film.

Two other major film festivals held in the United States with a gay and lesbian connection are the Outfest, the New York Festival and the Gay Film Festival. All over the world there are about 125 such festivals held every year and the number is growing. The Philippines plans to host its own festival of this nature in 2006.

The festivals try to make the location count when it comes to attracting the big names in the industry and often have to rent or borrow theatres to make sure they can have as many people in attendance as possible.
