When you want to make your own movie, there are some things you have to know about filmmaking to get the basics right. Then all it takes is a movie camera, some props and actors and you can start shooting your movie. Of course, your first movie will be very low budget, but it will give you untold riches in learning the business. You’ll find it’s the same old adage as learning anything else in this life - practice makes perfect.

So get that movie camera out and if you have an idea for a short movie go for it. Remember you also have to know a little about editing. Not even the big guys shoot the perfect movie and editing is a big part of making your movie as close to perfect as you can get it.

If you’re just starting out, try doing interviews first. These are fairly easy to do, but make sure you have the right lighting and that the questions you ask are important and of interest to people you hope will watch. Choose a topic that is prominent in today’s news and make sure the answers that you edit for your movie are informative and enlightening to the viewers. After you do your interview, just edit the parts that you feel don’t show your interview in the best light.

Another way to practice filmmaking is make a home movie. You can design your own set and get your family involved in the project. Write a short script of interest and make sure that the lines you want in your movie are distributed to the cast you have chosen, whether it’s family or friends. You want to make sure they are taking this seriously and it is important to you that your ideas on paper are transferred to the screen in the best possible way. After you finish your movie you can edit out the things that don’t please you.

You don’t have to have a cast to make a movie. T ake your movie camera to the stree ts and try a short documentary. T his can be on anythi ng that takes your interest, such as dogs, cats, the homeless - something that’s happening i n your town that is news worthy . Your town or city is a goldmine of ideas for movies with everything or anything that takes your interest and will capture the interest of an audience.
