Film Festival Overview
A film festival involves showing many films over a short period of time, such as within a week. It is a competition of sorts between all the different films produced in a given year in a country or within a certain film genre. Such an event not only includes full-length feature films, but two and three minute pieces and documentaries.
In order for a film to be part of the festival it has to go through a rigorous process. The filmmakers have to submit the film to the particular organization and the selection committee decides which category the film should be in. There are also specific categories within the festival for film schools and for those new to the industry.
Taking part in a festival is one way to get exposure that you need to gain recognition because important people from the film industry attend the various international festivals scouting new talent. This refers to actors as well as writers and directors.
One of the internationally recognized film festivals that reads like the Who’s Who of film when it comes to the attendees is the Cannes Film Festival, held annually in Cannes, France. There are personnel from the major world press producers from buyers and sellers all over the world present at such an event.
Attending a film festival can be very tiring and you must really love films to attend every function. There can be as many as 200 films or more presented in a week and each of these is judged according to a specific set of criteria. The winners go on to become great films recommended for other awards, such as the Academy Awards based on popularity among filmgoers after they are released in the cinemas. Many of the films never reach that stage but just the fact of being worthy of being shown at a film festival is often enough.
You cannot buy tickets to attend this type of film festival. Attendance is restricted to invitation only or to those with the proper accreditations.
