There are many, many, ways of entering your film in a film festival in today’s market. If you’re just starting out in the film business, it would be wise to test the waters on a smaller level and enter it in one of the smaller scale festivals, rather than the Cannes Film Festival. Of course if you think you’re that good, go ahead and shoot for the stars, but in reality a film festival on a smaller scale will suffice to give you an idea of how your film rates against others that are entered.

There have been occasions when a film made from an unheard of director was picked up at these smaller film festivals and went on to become a box office hit. The festival is what gives you the start, but it is the viewing public that makes it a hot. If the masses love what you’ve made, you’re on your way, but even if they don’t then you can still enter a film in another festival.

These film festivals are advocates for your work in film. They promote what you and others have worked so hard to develop. Film festivals always attract scouts for movie producers and if you’re lucky your film could be chosen for bigger and better things. The festivals get your work out there to the public, which in reality is your greatest judge.

A festival is a competition of artists. You submit your work to a festival for cash awards and a committee that decides which films will be shown at the festival will watch your film. These committees watch all the work that is entered. During the week of the festival the jurors watch the films that has been chosen for public screening and rate them to determine the allotment of prizes. The film is usually judged by three categories narrative, documentary, and experimental. With some of the film festivals you can enter in a non-competitive category and get necessary feedback on your venture into the film industry.
