There are a number of ways in which you can look after a diamond and keep it clean, brilliant, and sparkly. Firstly, you should always remember to keep your diamond jewellery somewhere safe when you are not wearing it to minimize on the risk of damage and dirt or dust. Also, keep your diamond jewellery packed safely when you travel to keep it safe and protected against damage.

Diamond can collect a variety of debris that can make them look dull. It is easy for a film to build up over the diamond, taking away its sparkle and sheen and making it look worn. Everything from powder and dust in the air to the skin’s oils can spoil the brilliance of a diamond. The following methods can help to keep your diamonds looking sparkly, brilliant, and stunning.

Detergent

You can use a mild liquid detergent combined with warm water to make a cleaning solution. Place the diamond jewellery into the solution and then gently brush with a small, soft brush such as an eyebrow brush from a make-up kit. You can then place the jewellery onto a strainer and rinse with warm water. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently dry the jewellery.

Cold water

In a cup, make up a solution of fifty percent water and fifty percent household ammonia. Soak the diamond for around half an hour, and then remove, gently clean with a small, soft brush, dip back into the solution, and then drain on some tissue.

Specialist cleaners

You can now get ultrasonic cleaners that will get your diamonds and other gems sparkling in next to no time. You fill the metal cup provided with water and detergent. The machine then creates the cleaning action when it is turned on, getting your jewellery sparking again.

Go to your jeweller

If in doubt, it is best to take your diamonds to a jeweller who can clean them professionally and safely. This is an inexpensive procedure, and you can keep your precious gems looking as good as new with a regular clean.

Remember, part of keeping your diamonds safe and clean is to keep them stored safely. Use a jewellery-box with fabric lining or separated department, or wrap each piece of diamond jewellery in tissue to ensure that the diamonds do not scratch one another or scratch other pieces of jewellery.
