The cost of drug use prevention and research reaches millions of dollars each year as governments try to find ways of preventing drug abuse. The research that goes into finding how illicit drugs are made and their effects on the body is staggering. The efforts of police and government into stopping the entry and sale of drugs requires setting up special task forces that devote their time to this endeavour.

 

Schools are the main targets in trying to prevent drug use among teens. Police officers regularly make presentations in high schools along with doctors and former drug addicts in an effort to keep these young people from abusing drugs. By educating students about the social and medical implications of abusing drugs, they are hoping to stop this problem from spreading.

 

Research has shown that children are at the most risk when it comes to abusing drugs. Traffickers try to catch them at an early age when they are most vulnerable and hope to turn them into regular customers. The mission of drug use prevention is the old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Through research, the government agencies can learn more about the factors leading to drug use and try to stop it before it starts.

 

However, drug use prevention is limited in some ways. No matter how much you try to educate people about the disastrous effects of using drugs, there are some hidden factors. In families, anything out of the ordinary may be hidden, such as abuse, which leads the children into drug abuse to help them cope. Such abusers often hide their addiction and no one knows about it until it is too late. Research confirms there are protective factors involved in preventing drug abuse, such as strong family bonds and supportive environments.

 

Drug use prevention programs need to enhance the protective factors and reduce the risk factors involved. They also need to target all forms of drug abuse, such as tobacco and alcohol and the programs used need to be age appropriate.
