Hedy Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Kiesler on November 9th 1914 in Vienna Austria. Hedy was dubbed the most beautiful woman to ever appear in films. The daughter of a banker, Hedy enjoyed a secure childhood while she dreamed of stardom. By the time she was a teenager, she decided to drop out of school and seek her fame as an actress. Her first role was a small part in the German film “Monkey on the Street” in 1930. Though Hedy was of Jewish ancestry she married a Nazi sympathizer, Fritz Mandl.

In 1932, Hedy appeared in a German film called “Extasy” and had made the gutsy move to be nude. It's the story of a young girl who is married to a gentleman much younger than she, but she winds up falling in love with a young soldier. The movie's nude scenes created a sensation all over the world. This film in no way compared to the R rated movies of today but was enough to get it banned by the United States. Extasy was eventually Hitler banned the film as well because of Hedy’s Jewish background.

Because of Hedy’s daring appearance in the nude, the Hollywood producers took notice of her and signed her on the condition that she change her name and only appear in wholesome roles. Nevertheless, she would become one of film’s golden age beauties.

In 1949, she appeared as Delilah opposite Victor Mature in “Samson and Delilah”. This film proved to be Paramount Studios biggest movie to date bringing in $12 million in rental from theaters.

Hedy died on January 19th 2000 in Florida.
