Frederic Austerlitz, later to become known as singing, dancing and acting sensation Fred Astaire, was born in Nebraska on 10 th May 1899. The son of an Austrian immigrant, the young Fred started his showbiz career at the tender age of five, and he continued to perform with his sister Adele until 1932, when Adele decided to get married.

Fred then made his way to Hollywood, and was quickly signed up for movies by RKO and MGM. His early performances included movies, ‘Dancing Lady’ and ‘Flying Down to Rio’, where he began what was to become a world-famous partnership with Ginger Rogers.

Fred Astaire continued to act, dance and sing until 1945, when he retired and opened a number of dancing schools. However, retirement didn’t last long and he returned to performing in 1947. His later work included plain acting, without the famous dancing and singing that he had become so well known for. Fred died on 22 nd June 1987 in California from pneumonia.
