Personalized children’s books are a great way to get your children into the reading habit. It allows them to explore and discover the amazing power of the written word. You can either order a personalized children’s book for your child or if you have a creative streak why not make one for him or her?
Getting started making personalized children’s books:
First off, you have to know this is going to be great fun! Approach it as the joyous task it is instead of a chore you have to do. The great part about making personalized children’s books yourself is that while your child will thoroughly enjoy reading the book, you are going to have a blast making it. There are several things to keep in mind while making personalized children’s books.
1.) The storyline for your personalized children’s book: Do you want the book to be based on real experiences or on fantasy? If real experiences then you need to choose something that your child is currently involved in or passionate about. It could be ballet dancing if your daughter wants to be a ballerina, a trip to the zoo if your 2-year-old thinks animals are the best, a book about your child and his pet or a visit to her grandparents’ home. If you prefer to encourage your child’s imagination then try your hand at a personalized children’s book based on fantasy. A story akin Hansel and Gretal, Cinderella or perhaps something more contemporary.
2.) Write the story: This is the toughest part. You don’t have to be a graduate in English Literature or have a Degree in Communications and Journalism to do this. Remember, the story is for your child and he needs to enjoy it. If you find yourself unable to come up with something you like, try searching the web for some free personalized children’s books ideas. You could also take a classic like Three Little Pigs and modify it to appeal to your child. Remember to insert your child’s name wherever you can.
3.) Illustrations: Unless you’re an artist your best bet is to get a CD ROM of copyright free clip arts and use those. You would need some basic computer knowledge, a computer and a printer.
4.) A Photo personalized children’s book: If you are skilled with imaging software like Adobe Photoshop, you can go one step further and put in photographs of your child in the book. Scan a few photographs of your child and cut out the faces. Insert the face wherever you can in the illustrations you have chosen. The illustrations don’t necessarily have to have human figures. If your story is about Three Little Pigs, you can have your child be one of the pigs (ok, perhaps that was not a great idea… how about one of the bears in Goldilocks, or Goldilocks herself).
5.) Assemble the book: Now that you have your illustrations and the story to go with them, you are ready to assemble your very first personalized children’s book! You can use Adobe PageMaker to give a complete book feel with the cover page, index, page numbers, copyrights – the complete works. If that is beyond your technical and software skills, you can even use generic software like MS Word. Again, the book is for your child and not commercial purposes.
And there you have it…your first-ever personalized children’s book is ready. Now is the time for some feedback. Wrap the book and present it to you child – watch his / her eyes light up. The smile you get will be all the thanks you could ever ask for.
