There are three different types of cell phones. The regular cell phone is the analog type. These phones are a bit more expensive, but with these you know that you can use them just about anywhere there is service. This type of phone is a good choice for travellers. However, the sound quality is not always that good and quite often there is a lot of static interference. The rate you pay for each minute you are talking on the phone is also higher.
The second type of cell phone is the digital cell phone. These phones have a better sound quality and much cheaper rates for calling. Another advantage with this type of cell phone is that the batteries last a lot longer. However, there are disadvantages in that the coverage tends to be irregular. Once you are out of populated areas, you might not be able to get a signal on the phone because there are not as many digital equipped antennas. This is something, though, that the cell phone companies are trying very hard to correct.
A third type of cell phone is the PCS cell phone. This is the personal communications service and there is very little difference between this type of cell phone and the digital one.
When you buy a cell phone, there are other features you can consider. The dual mode cell phones allow you to switch from analog to digital and back again. This is really good if you are travelling because the cell phone looks for a digital antenna and if it doesn’t find one, it automatically switches to the analog mode.
You have to consider how long the battery will last. You need to think about how long you might need to have it on standby and how long you have to use it to talk. Many people invest in two batteries, so that while they are using one, they are charging the other and do not have to spend time without the use of a phone.
Look at the weight of the cell phone. Some of the newer types of cell phones on the market are very tiny. You can fit it in your purse or your pocket or clip it onto your belt.
