Footwear outdoors is very important if you’re planning a camping, hiking, or climbing trip. Getting caught in the wilderness without the proper footwear can result in an uncomfortable or even a dangerous, life threatening, experience. Skiers especially must take precaution, because being outside in freezing cold temperatures for long periods of time and be potentially dangerous.
Frostbite is not pleasant and can be avoided with proper precaution, mainly in the sense of proper footwear.
You’ll want to think about what you’re going to be using your hiking boots for. There’s nothing better that spending a nice long weekend in a winter cabin and being comfortable in the outdoors. It is easier to appreciate Nature when your feet are warm. Trips that require long distances and heavy loads are usually more enjoyable and safer with good solid hiking boots. For shorter day trips, you can probably just wear trail shoes, which are a version of the sneaker, though “souped up”. They are the crossbreed of sneakers and boots, usually coming up just to the ankle.
Hiking boots can be divided into two groups:
The first are very cushioned and are to be worn is normal hiking socks (also important to consider when buying boots). These boots have the advantage of being comfortable from the get go. The downside to these is that there is no possibility to decrease the cushion.
With the second type of hiking boots, there is little if any cushion. These are more serious and usually require a couple pairs of polypropylene or wool socks. While these may seem less comfortable at the start, you’ll probably find, as many already have, that they are useful in there ability to be changed.
All kinds of boots and trail shoes have some kind of protection against the elements. Leather is one of the most common textiles used for boots, and it is treated in a variety of ways to accommodate the hiker. Boots that are “breathable”, like those that use Gortex ®, can release moisture from sweat out of the boot, while keeping the heat in. This technology has boomed in the past years, and there are now competitors that produce substances with the same technology as Gortex ® at a lower price. This competition has also lowered the price of Gortex ® products. In general, if you can afford it, go with the Gortex ®. They usually offer attractive warrantees, though because of the high level of quality in design and durability, it is unlikely that you’ll ever have to use it.
For boots that are not breathable, it’s important to “waterproof” them before and after all trips. Water-proofing products are available online or at your local outdoor sporting goods provider. There are a number of these products and they all work well for the most part. Read up on them, and pick the one that sounds best. When you buy your boots, be sure that you find out how you should treat the leather. With boots that use Gortex ® for example, it’s not a good idea to use water-proofing products because they can close off the cells in the leather and make it impossible for moisture to leave the boot.
It’s worth it to learn a little about your boots when you buy them, so that they last you longer and in that way become a good investment.
A good solid pair of hiking boots should in fact last you a very long and enjoyable time!
For children, because they are still growing, it is a little more difficult to make boots last long, however, they can easily be passed down, because they will ultimately out wear the feet that wear them.
