As with any surgery, there is breast enlargement surgery risk that your surgeon will tell you about. This surgery is relatively straightforward, but sometimes complications can develop. The most common problem that arises is called capsular contracture. This occurs when the scar or capsule around the implant starts to harden or become tight. This squeezes the soft implant and the breast will most likely feel hard. It also develops if there is excessive scar tissue around the implant. Even though the silicone implant cannot move, the body recognizes it as having a foreign substance injected into the body and attempts to get rid of it by walling it off from the rest of the tissues. This process is normal for the human body and a thin capsule forms around the implant itself. This problem can be treated in several ways, such as the removal of the excess scar tissue or even removal and replacement of the implant.
There is a possibility of excessive bleeding following breast enlargement surgery. The bleeding may cause swelling and pain and if the bleeding continues, further surgery may be needed to control it. The extra surgery may also be necessary to remove any blood that has accumulated in the breast or around the implant. Some women develop an infection around an implant. This is another way the body tries to rid itself of a foreign object. The infection may not be evident immediately after the surgery and may not be realized until several weeks later. In some cases, the implant may have to be removed until the infection is fully cleared up and then reinserted.
It is common for women who have had breast enlargement surgery to report that their nipples are very sensitive, under sensitive or even feel numb. There may also be small patches of the breast near the incision that also feel numb. In the majority of patients, these symptoms gradually disappear, but there have been cases where they became permanent and never went away. Occasionally, breast implants may rupture and tear and then leak into the breast. The rupture can be the result of an injury, but it can also result from the simple movement of the breast and implant or a slight compression of the breast. There is no danger involved if this happens, because the implant will gradually deflate and the saline will be absorbed by the body.
If you have a gel filled implant and it breaks, one of two things can happen. If the shell breaks but the implant remains intact, then you will not even feel it. If the implant itself tears, the silicone gel can leak into the surrounding tissues of the breast. It can settle in the breast causing a new scar to develop around it or it can move to another part of the body. This will cause a change in the shape and firmness of the breast and requires surgery to replace the leaking implant.
In rare cases, women with breast implants have reported having symptoms similar to scleroderma, a disease of the immune system and arthritis. The symptoms included swelling of the joints high temperature, feelings of fatigue and pain in the breast. No links have been found between breast implants and breast cancer, but if you go for a mammogram, you need to inform the radiologists because the implants can affect the reading of the X-Ray.
There is no evidence to indicate that breast enlargement surgery has any affect of fertility or the ability to breastfeed. Mothers who nursed their baby less than a year before they underwent the breast enlargement surgery may notice that the breast leaks milk for a few days following the surgery. Your doctor can prescribe medication to help with this problem, if it causes you any discomfort.
