There are so many different types of cat food on the market these days, it can be quite bewildering to know where to start and which one to choose, They all claim to be packed with nutrition, so many people opt for the cheapest. However, it is important to remember that cheap food is unlikely to be made with the most nutritious of ingredients, and nutrition is one of the key things to a long and healthy life for your cat.
Think of the way you feed your family; most people wouldn’t dream of giving their family junk food for every meal, every day. Why? Because ultimately it’s full of junk and has little to no nutritional value. By selecting the wrong foods for your cat, this is exactly what you are doing to your cat. Below you will find a listing of the various types of cat foods, and what to look out for:
Canned food
Many people feed their cats canned food day in and day out. However, although this type of food is okay on occasion, it does nothing to improve dental health for your cat and is not always all that filling for them. If you do buy canned food, make sure that you buy a quality one with choice cuts of meat rather than one made up of odds and ends, as otherwise your cat will get very little nutritional value from it.
Dry snacks
Dry snacks can make a good supplement to a cat that has a canned food diet, and can help to improve dental health as well as give your cat a variation on texture and taste. We all need to sample varied diets, and this will help your cat enjoy a more balanced eating plan.
Cheap dry food
Many cat owners head for the pet store each week and buy a bumper bag of bargain dry food. This may prove cost effective, and may fill the cat up for a short while. However, cheap food is unlikely to be packed with adequate nutrition, which in turn means that your cat will need more of it to feel full, which ultimately means that you will need to buy more of it. So, eventually it could end up costing as much if not more than a quality food.
Complete dry food
This is the type of cat food that most vets will now recommend for a variety if reasons. It is called complete because it has been scientifically formulated to include the nutritional requirements that your cat needs, so with every meal your cat can enjoy a range of required vitamins and minerals. You may find that this food is more expensive than some others, but because your cat needs less of it to feel full it can actually work out more cost effective. On top of this, complete dry food will help to keep your cat’s teeth and gums in good condition as well as providing well-rounded nutrition.
Fresh food
Despite what many people think, fresh food is not strictly reserved for humans. Your cat can benefit greatly from the odd meal of fresh, nutritious food. That is not to say that you should feed your cat able scraps between meals, as this will simply promote obesity. However, replacing the occasional meal of kibble with one of fresh food can help. You don’t have to go out of your way to cook fresh food either. If you are having chicken for dinner, your cat will enjoy some strips of skinless (and definitely boneless!) chicken. Fresh fish (again, ensure that any bones are removed) will also go down a treat. Even the occasional scrambled egg can prove a nice change and a light meal, and is sometime recommended as a meal replacement for cats if they have a tummy upset.
Remember, cats need a nutritious and balanced diet in order to stay healthy. Their diet will affect their coat, their oral health, their weight, their energy levels, their digestive systems and their general health, the more nutritious the diet, the healthier – and happier – your cat will be. Never forget, your cat needs constant access to fresh clean water so ensure that this ism available for him both indoors and outdoors if necessary.
